Swiss Travellers Seek More Consular Protection Abroad

Swiss citizens are travelling overseas in record numbers, and with that growth comes an increasing need for consular support. According to the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, consular services assisted Swiss travellers in 1,238 cases during 2025, representing a 14% increase compared to the previous year.

The rise reflects a growing trend among Swiss residents to explore international destinations. Official statistics show that Swiss citizens made approximately 12 million trips lasting more than one day during 2025. As international travel continues to expand, authorities have reported a noticeable increase in emergencies requiring diplomatic and consular intervention.

One significant factor behind the increase is the popularity of adventure and high-risk travel destinations. More travellers are choosing remote regions and countries with challenging conditions, increasing the likelihood of requiring emergency assistance from Swiss authorities.

Mental health emergencies abroad also contributed to the higher number of consular cases. In addition, a growing number of Swiss citizens in retirement age who remain active travellers experienced health-related incidents while overseas, requiring support and coordination from consular officials.

Swiss authorities have also observed an increase in solo travel. While travelling alone offers flexibility and unique experiences, officials warn that many travellers underestimate potential risks and fail to prepare adequately before departure.

The Swiss Foreign Ministry continues to encourage citizens to take personal responsibility by researching destinations carefully, obtaining appropriate travel insurance, monitoring official travel advisories, and ensuring they are prepared for unexpected situations.

As international travel reaches new heights, Swiss authorities emphasize that proper planning remains the best protection against emergencies abroad. The latest figures highlight the importance of travel preparedness for every Swiss citizen exploring the world.
