Swiss Lakes Rated ‘Impeccable’ for Swimming

The lakes in Central Switzerland have been rated “impeccable” for bathing water quality following recent environmental tests conducted across multiple cantons.

Excellent Water Quality Confirmed

Authorities confirmed that bathing water in lakes across Uri, Schwyz, Obwalden, Nidwalden, and Lucerne meets “good to excellent” standards. The results were based on samples collected between May and June from 65 bathing locations, including Lake Lucerne, Lake Zug, Lake Zurich, and several smaller lakes in the region.

Strict Scientific Testing

Water samples were analysed for intestinal bacteria, which are key indicators of contamination and health safety. The testing was carried out by the Laboratory of the Original Cantons and the Food Control and Consumer Protection Agency.Officials confirmed that no harmful levels of contamination were found at any of the tested sites.

Safe Conditions for Bathers

Authorities stated that all sampling points met safety requirements, meaning no restrictions or warnings were necessary for swimmers. This ensures that locals and tourists can safely enjoy Switzerland’s popular summer bathing spots.

Additional Environmental Observation

The study focused only on microbiological water quality and did not assess the presence of duck fleas (ceraria), which may appear near lake shores during warmer temperatures. While these organisms are harmless, they can sometimes cause temporary skin itching.

Switzerland’s Strong Water Standards

Switzerland continues to maintain some of the highest environmental water quality standards in Europe. Regular monitoring ensures that lakes remain safe for recreation, tourism, and public health.
