Swiss Universities Remain Strong in Global QS Rankings

Switzerland continues to maintain a strong presence in global higher education rankings, with several leading institutions featured in the latest QS World University Rankings released by Quacquarelli Symonds.

The Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich), the Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL), and the University of Zurich are all ranked among the top 100 universities worldwide.

ETH Zurich remains the country’s highest-ranked institution, although it has slipped one place to 8th position globally compared to last year. EPFL holds steady at 22nd place, while the University of Zurich has improved its position, rising from 100th to 98th place.

Globally, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) retains first place for the 15th consecutive year. Imperial College London remains in second place for the third year running, sharing the position with Stanford University, which has moved up from third place.

According to QS, minor changes in rankings at the top level do not necessarily reflect a decline in academic quality. The organization explained that small differences in performance among leading universities can lead to shifts in position from year to year.

Overall, Swiss universities showed mixed performance in this year’s rankings. Out of ten institutions evaluated, three improved their positions, six declined, and one remained stable.

The Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) recorded the most significant improvement, climbing 17 places to rank 456 globally, driven mainly by stronger research citation performance.

The University of Basel re-entered the top 150, supported by improvements in academic reputation and graduate employment outcomes.

Other institutions, including the University of Geneva, University of Bern, University of Lausanne, University of Freiburg, and Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW), experienced slight declines in their rankings.

Despite these variations, Switzerland continues to be recognized as one of the world’s leading education hubs, maintaining strong research output, academic reputation, and global competitiveness.
