Sri Lanka Updates Fuel & Electricity Prices Amid Global Market

Sri Lanka Minister Nalinda Jayathissa addresses fuel and electricity pricing

Colombo, 21 March 2026 – Sri Lanka’s fuel and electricity prices will be determined in accordance with global market trends, Cabinet Spokesperson and Minister Nalinda Jayathissa confirmed during a special media briefing held at the Government Information Department on 20 March 2026.

Minister Jayathissa stated that the government’s primary objective is to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply across the country. He added that all necessary measures are currently being implemented to maintain a stable power distribution network.

He noted that electricity consumption varies from month to month, with demand rising significantly during certain periods. “The prices of essential commodities such as coal have increased sharply in the global market. Current tender prices are higher than usual, and we must make decisions considering this challenging global economic environment,” he explained.

According to the Minister, fuel prices and electricity tariffs will continue to be set based on fluctuations in the international coal and crude oil markets. This approach ensures that domestic pricing aligns with global supply and demand trends, while maintaining energy security.

Minister Jayathissa also highlighted that reports on the quality of imported coal are currently under review, with formal assessments being conducted to ensure compliance with national standards.

The government remains committed to stabilizing energy prices and securing long-term supply agreements, aiming to provide reliable fuel and electricity to citizens while navigating volatile global markets.
